Group comes up with 3rd site for dog park: Announcement likely before month’s end

MARSHFIELD - A group of citizens who have been trying for more than two years to build a dog park in Marshfield are ‘‘a week or two away’’ from announcing their next location of choice, their leader says.

Brad White, president of the Marshfield Bark Park Committee, said members have found a piece of town-owned land that has exactly the characteristics they want. He declined to say where the land is.

"It’s as near perfect as we can find," he said. "It’s flat, it’s well-treed, it’s got a pine-needle base and it smells like Mother Nature."

This is the third time the committee has chosen a Bark Park site. The first location, an acre off Forest Street, was rejected because of fears that animal waste would pollute the Furnace Brook aquifer, a major source of town drinking water.

Then, in February, committee members proposed building the park at Harbor Park. They dropped the idea after neighbors objected and after learning that Harbor Park was built using state money and therefore had to remain available for general public use.

Committee members began working with Town Administrator John Clifford and other town hall employees to find a site with fewer hang-ups. White said two were recommended, and the committee has a clear favorite.

He said he hopes the new site will win endorsements from the selectmen, the conservation commission, the board of health, the planning board and the public works board within the next week or so.

Selectmen Chairman Michael Maresco said he was not aware of the new favored location. Neither was public works board member Robert Shaughnessy, who was among those who raised concerns about the Forest Street site.

"As long as it’s not on top of the wells, I don’t care where they put it," Shaughnessy said.

White said he is confident that if the site is accepted, the committee can raise the $50,000 it needs to open the park in a matter of weeks.

"Hopefully, we’ll have a Bark Park this summer," he said.
